Nothing can ruin an otherwise fun night of poker more than going on the dreaded proverbial tilt. Wikipedia defines tilt as “… a state of mental or emotional confusion or frustration in which a player adopts a less than optimal strategy, usually resulting in the player becoming over-aggressive.” When on tilt, a player will often begin to play emotionally and recklessly, thus leading to big losses.

Some things that lead to tilt are frustration, annoyance with other players, bad beats, or simply bad luck. By implementing the following strategies while playing at our Houston poker club, players will more effectively avoid and deal with tilt.

Know Your Triggers at the Poker Table

Obviously, the most effective way to combat tilt is to never go on it in the first place. This can be achieved by knowing what your triggers are during a poker game. A few questions you can ask yourself to help you realize your triggers include: “What gets under your skin so much that you would be willing to throw out your normal strategy?” “What disturbs you so much that you can’t stop dwelling on the past and focus on the present?”

By knowing what your triggers are, you can take the steps to avoid or minimize them from occurring. This comes with experience playing in our poker room. Once you know your tilt triggers, you will be better equipped to keep tilt from manifesting and overtaking you.

Step Away From the Poker Table

The moment you start feeling you’re going on tilt, you should take a break from playing. Walk away from the poker room for a few moments to clear your mind. You need to take some time out to calm down and regain your composure.

Thankfully, Lions Poker Palace is a full service poker club that provides many things for you to do while not at the table. Perhaps you could use a bite to eat.
